Research Projects

The research coordinated by Professor Maria Lucia pecly, aims to understand how the process of "Urban Design Code" in England can be used as a tool in the construction of quality parameters for teaching social housing projects in Brazil. The approach adopted by design coding seeks to establish principles of urban design quality with an emphasis on the connection between the design process, management and governance of the project and the final product built.

The process of coding urban design (Urban Design Code) in the United Kingdom:

 Process + Product

The Urban Design Code was created in England with the objective of establishing parameters that could control the project quality of some projects, and also to streamline the process of planning the use of land, the bureaucracy of approval of projects. This task could not be delivered to the entrepreneurs, who are usually focused

in your business interests. According to the CABE report, coding for a given project can increase the quality of the built environment and can also speed up the process of approving the bureaucratic process for changing the use of a given area. Quality urban design has been identified as an important dimension of quality in the theme of social sustainability. Urban Design Code is about valuing the historical character of a place, permeability and mobility, legibility, quality of public spaces, continuity and closings, flexibility and resilience. It is important to understand that a codification process, in England, aims to create guides to good design practices, and begins with the execution of a three-dimensional masterplan, which makes clear the relationship between volumetric composition, density, use, the delimitation of intermediate spaces, the boundaries between public and private, openings, corner valorization, among other aspects addressed in the codification process.

Ian Bentley (1985) calls attention to the important relationship between the “product”, which he classifies as the final result of the built project, and the “process”, which deals with the relationships between the different actors involved in the project. Bentley also highlights the governance and management of this process, from conception, community participation to project approval. The last step is the monitoring and quality control of the projects carried out.
