SOCIAL IMPACT

EXTENSION PROJECTS

PROARQ has been dedicated, over the years (especially since 2020), to implementing activities that highlight and deepen the social impact of the Program on both Brazilian and international society, demonstrating the ability of its faculty and students to articulate ideas, promote actions, and develop solutions for dilemmas involving architecture and urbanism, as well as various related topics, always in line with ongoing research, while engaging with society (the external audience of the Program).
In addition to articles and books that have reached diverse audiences and demonstrated the scope of applied research within the Program, events, workshops, studios, and extension activities have brought discussions BEYOND THE WALLS, addressing public policies, urban living, community and group qualification in risk situations, concerns about school architecture and childhood, interest in environmental and lighting comfort of buildings, knowledge exchange, and the development of methodologies for a theoretical-practical approach to cities.

2020-21

PROARQ READING CIRCLES (An initiative of the PROARQ Editorial and Extension Program) - Initiated in Dec/2020, the MEETINGS were held remotely as READING AND DISCUSSION CIRCLES, streamed live on PROARQ’s YouTube channel (CLICK HERE). These sessions bring authors/editors of books produced through Research Networks and derived from PROARQ Theses and Dissertations into a colloquial, friendly, and engaging language, enhancing accessibility for interested audiences, often including non-specialists. The level of participation and commitment from those involved transcends academic language, allowing the popularization and publicization of research at PROARQ. Occurrence: every 2nd Monday of the month.

2019

BUILDING SPACES TOGETHER - How are we building our cities? Who participates in decision-making regarding city production and management? What are the potentials for landscape transformation? These and other questions were addressed in LOCAL PROJECT CHALLENGES: BUILDING SPACES TOGETHER, an event aimed at discussing contemporary city production under conditions of inequality, vulnerability, and conflict. The objective was to collectively develop a participatory urban intervention project through collaborations and co-productions involving researchers, professionals, government representatives, community representatives, and other civil society stakeholders in the Manguinhos neighborhood, along with children and local residents, in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro. Occurrence: October 15 to 25, 2019.

RESENSITIZING CITIES . RESENSITINZING CITIES - "Resensitizing Cities" was an event/workshop that was part of the preparatory agenda for the World Congress of Architects (UIA 2021 RIO), organized by LASC/Proarq/UFRJ, together with the extension course "Thinking Ambiances Through Subjectivity – 5th Edition." The event aimed to investigate everyday urban practices and the study of life rhythms intertwined with daily urban experiences on a small scale. By focusing on the sensory perceptions that influence uses and appropriations of the urban environment, the goal was to deepen discussions on strategies connecting urban living and affectivity in large metropolises, involving academic, artistic, and practitioner audiences from downtown Rio de Janeiro. Occurrence: October 2 to 5, 2019.
