Urban Ambiances: exploiting methodologies

Coordinated by professor Cristiane Duarte, the research seeks to understand and analyze the attributes of Urban Environments, the factors that make them particular, their ability to favor appropriation, awaken memory, participate in the formation of the various cultural groups that participate in the identity formation of the population of cities. As we know, Ambiances are the material and moral atmospheres that encompass thermal, luminous, sound, but also cultural and subjective sensations that involve a particular place and its occupants (Amphoux, 2004; Duarte et all, 2008). In recent years, the concept of Ambiance has assumed a prominent position in urban and architectural studies. Research in architecture and urbanism has already been shown to be incomplete when analyzing only the functional, formal and/or environmental aspects of the built space as isolated factors. Although it is still an incipient theme that needs further study, the study of Ambiances has provided new guidelines for spatial intervention projects. The research applies and validates specific methodologies for the analysis of ambiances in urban and architectural places, intending to understand spatial interrelationships as influencing the action and experience of subjects practicing the city and architecture itself. The spatial dynamics found to make the meeting points and contact zones between space and users emerge, highlighting the sensitive dimension of the city's ambiances.
