Urban and Environment Education: city-school dialogue.

Doctoral Thesis

The need for a critical civic education grounded in the perspective of architecture and urbanism is the central theme of this research. In this context, educational initiatives are discussed in which architects and urban planners serve as the main educators. These are referred to as Urban and Environmental Education, a term adopted from the international nomenclature Built Environment Education. Beyond the conceptual foundations of this form of education, the research also addresses related themes such as the social function of architecture and urbanism, citizenship, educating cities, intergenerationality, transdisciplinarity, and dialogue as essential elements of the learning process. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative and exploratory approach, employing multi-method strategies and the concept of researchWITH (pesquisarCOM) to construct the research data. Accordingly, the study analyzes the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), proposes pedagogical resources, and discusses educational experiments related to this approach — two of which were carried out in public schools within the municipal education system of Rio de Janeiro, specifically in the early years of elementary education. As a result, the research highlights the feasibility and relevance of integrating this educational approach into Brazil’s formal education system and, consequently, outlines pathways for its implementation, considering the involved actors, themes, methods, and related public policies.
