Doctoral Thesis
In this thesis, we present, as an object of study, the Jorge Machado Moreira building, describing its construction characteristics and pointing out theoretical alignments for its conservation. We intend to discuss the preservation of modern architecture in a more comprehensive way, expanding the analyzes beyond the formal aspects of archi- tecture, taking into account the concern to understand the “physical consistency”, ana- lyzing its conformation as an image and also as matter, substance. When we study, from the perspective of the history of construction, the buildings of the modern movement, we realize the importance of modern construction culture and its indisput- able presence in architectural examples. Much of the value of modern architecture derives from the use of new technologies and the formal possibilities generated by them, especially reinforced concrete. Therefore, the attribution of value to this build- ing must consider the construction materials, techniques and construction systems used as being subject to preservation. The transformations that occurred throughout the life of the building, the natural aging of structures and materials and the new needs imposed by its occupants created a series of issues and threats to its preserva- tion. Understanding that this value of “materiality” together with the formal aspects of the work, shape the value to be preserved in this building, we propose as a way to ap- ply the methodology of Conservation Management Plans and Preventive Conservation, as a way of controlling the isolated actions and allow this building to be transmitted to the future with the greatest possible material authenticity.
