12th PROARQ RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM – WHAT WE WERE, WHAT WE ARE: EXPECTATIONS AND PROPOSALS FOR AN EMERGING FUTURE

D.Since 1987, PROARQ has been in constant evolution, striving to achieve its established goals and to increasingly foster its scientific output and the dissemination of academic and professional knowledge, training highly qualified human resources for research, teaching, and professional management in Architecture. Today, after 34 years of development and as one of the oldest graduate programs in the field, PROARQ looks to expand its research networks and partnerships at the local, national, and international levels, reinforcing the strength of its CAPES rating of 6.

Many paths have been taken, and timely changes in Research Areas and Lines have been incorporated into the Program, aiming for a continuous alignment of research themes with contemporary issues and urgent demands. We ask ourselves now: who are we? What have we achieved? And, above all—as a way to reflect and balance: what were we? What relationships have been maintained and built to strengthen the Program and its expectations for continuity?

The program of the 12th PROARQ Research Colloquium – “WHAT WE WERE, WHAT WE ARE: expectations and proposals for an emerging future” was designed, similarly to the remote edition held in 2020, as a continuous and well-articulated initiative, aiming to foster greater engagement of the internal community (within PROARQ) and to allow flexible access for the external audience, which is warmly welcomed to the Colloquium in this era of digital experience. Thus, the “meetings” were scheduled for every Wednesday, from August 11 to September 29 (Phase 1 – lectures), and on specific dates in October (Phase 2 – the Research Colloquium itself).

The first phase was dedicated to lectures and roundtables organized by the Associate Coordination for Extension at PROARQ, aiming to integrate different themes raised by recent research carried out by PROARQ faculty and students, through the action and coordination of professors on each scheduled day. Our journey and our expansion toward the future were present in each of the sessions, organized as follows: August 11 (opening session), August 18 to 25 (sessions coordinated by faculty), September 1 to 15 (sessions coordinated by faculty), September 22 (session with affirmative action content), and September 29 (closing session of Phase 1, featuring architect Eduardo Souto de Moura).

The second phase took place between October 6 and 13, focusing on the presentation of ongoing or completed research by graduate students, alumni, undergraduate research students, and PROARQ researchers, thus promoting the recognition of our current academic landscape, future prospects, and the Program’s self-assessment. In this phase, some days beyond Wednesdays were also dedicated to lectures and other activities.
