The purpose of this work is to reflect upon the urbanscape in the context of heritage value. It will be also of utmost importance to understand public open space as a qualifier of the built space and as an important instrument of transformation and appreciation of landscape. The obvious objective is to value the open areas present as an object of study for the public use and the insertion of new functions appropriated to the contemporary city allowing the valuation of the existing heritage and the creation of new urban dynamic and new forms of perception of space. The case of study is part of the Projeto do Corredor Cultural, which is a protected area of the cultural environment that proposes the preservation, together with the enhancement of the heritage of the central region of the City of Rio de Janeiro. This heritag is composed not only of buildings but also of the urban environment, cultural values and ways of life that give identity to the place. For the development of this work, it is proposed to first reflect theoretically on the urban landscape through its historical, cultural, morphological and function perspectives. Secondly, highlight the importance of public open spaces taking in consideration the design of the urban cultural landscape and the value for the heritage. At the same time, investigate the theoretical reflections in this case study so that, finally, it is possible to present a proposal of intervention in order to renew the urban dynamics and to value the space that has a recognized importance for the city.
