Professional Master Degree Dissertation
The purpose of this master's research is to demonstrate the potential offered by digital tools in digital preservation of modern heritage. Currently, modern heritage is at considerable risk because of reasons such as, lack of protection and tipping, fragility and vulnerability of materials, functional obsolescence and default of value attribution. Aiming at this legacy, was developed the BIM (Building Information Modelling) of a modern architecture example from Rio de Janeiro: Gustavo Capanema Palace. In this sense, presenting the digital reconstruction in its construction phase 1937-1945 and a proposal of intervention for the Penthouse. The BIM model of the Gustavo Capanema Palace was developed from studies about HBIM (Historic or Heritage building Information Modeling), 1996 survey in 2D CAD, historical documentation, direct measurement, photogrammetry, and DSM (Dense Stereo Matching). The results are the records of the main changes from conception architectural design in 1937 to the as Mbuilt in 1945, bringing together historical, constructive and chronological aspects in a single parametrized model. It highlights the main difficulties encountered in data collection and modeling, as well as the possibilities offered by the BIM platform in information management and digital documentation that will be essential for its program of maintenance and conservation. Finally, was developed a proposal for intervention using the BIM model, which consists of preliminary studies to requalify the Penthouse. The BIM model of the Gustavo Capanema Palace can be disseminated in different media and it’s a way of preserving the building memory, being possible through it to generate models for specific applications besides architecture, engineering and construction as: restoration area museum facilities experiences of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).
