This work presents the restructuring project of the Casa Ateliê Carlos Scliar, located in the town of Cabo Frio in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Thebuilding is inscribed on the town’s cultural heritage listdue to its historical, symbolic and affective values and itsclose connection with the artist and the city. The house features the Brazilian colonial architecture, and keepsthe archival and museum ollections of its patron, the painter Carlos Scliar, an active personality during important eventsin the 20th-century Brazilian history. The building results from the construction designed by the artist himself: a place devoted to thinking, producing and circulating art.Scliar's home and studio for more than three decades, its history blends with the artist's, at a time when, from his window, he would portray the landscape and the customs of the place. This experience justified his struggle for preserving the culture and the natural environment of the region. The architectural project herein aims to create the necessary conditions for the institution to carry out its activities, while expanding the public access to the house museum,by means ofrestoring the historical house from the standpoint of Conservation, there foresecuringthe spirit of place. In order to observe the institution's program, it is also considereda solution the insertion of a new building, performed with critical positioning based on the distance and neutrality of the constituent elements, emphacizing the preexistence of the building.
